Worthington State Forest/Appalachian Trail at Sunfish Pond
Mike: Split trip - one crew did a nice 10 mile hike, the other did 16 miles on the Appalachian Trail and approach trails.
Of course, we ended at Hot Dog Johnny's.
So Much Fun at Sunfish Pond
By Magnus P.
When we got to Worthington State Forest, we dropped the base campers off at their camp, and we backpackers headed for our camp. We started hiking up the mountain late at night, around 11:00-11:30. It took us a long time, and there was only one flat spot. After 45 minutes, we got to our campground and made camp, and went right to bed since it was 12:30 at night. In the morning, we broke camp and started our hike. It was very rocky, and we were pretty high on the mountain. We soon got to Sunfish Pond, and filled up on our water, had a break there, and then we kept on hiking. We kept on hiking, and saw plenty of other good views of the lake. We also saw some small stone structures at an opening, and I thought that was cool. While we were hiking, we were coming across a ton of stones, and at some parts, there were huge stones that kind of reminded me of a sidewalk. At a few high spots, we could see very far, and very wide, especially at the View. We could see villages, big buildings, and even an airplane doing tricks. After a little bit, we started to hike again. It was almost all downhill from there and a lot more rocks as well. We then got to a more even area with rocks all around, and a small bridge with a stream under it. We had to keep on hiking, because nearby was a lodge, and we had to get food to eat for lunch. After a while, we went out of the lodge, got our stuff, and started to head back. After a long time, we got back up to the View, and then we rested there again. We could see a birthday balloon float by as we rested. The temperatures were obviously much warmer then. We kept on hiking back, and we got to the rocky area where we filled up on our water again, and cooked our dinner. Most of us enjoyed our dinner, while the smoked chicken tasted horrible to some people. After eating, we got back to our camp and went to sleep. The next morning, we got up, and broke camp. We went down to the cars, and hung around on a waterfall. We then headed to Hot Dog Johnny’s, and then headed home.
